Lud Releases New EP
Music for Librarians first in many years
Carrboro — Ancient North Carolina rock band Lud ventured into the studio early this year and emerged with Music for Librarians, a collection of five songs, each a unique statement in response to the various things happening of late.
The band, formed in the decadent cauldron of early 90s Chapel Hill by Bryon Settle, Kirk Ross and the late Paul Price, features Sara Bell on bass, keyboards and harmonies and Tim Salemy on drums and percussion along with Ross and Settle on guitar.
The five songs were recorded by Charles Chace at Beep Wave in Carrboro and mixed and mastered by Pete Weiss at Jade Cow Music in Somerville, Mass.
The songs, written by Ross during times of rising fascism and pandemic surges, are appropriately blunt, none more so than “Mayday” which begins a litany of the song’s purpose with “this is for the fucked up bullshit happening everyday.” It ends with “this is for librarians” and an extended guitar solo. Of course.
Also in the collection is “Starlight,” an up-tempo reflection on near death experiences and how much more this era sucks for young people than the 90s; a quiet song called “Jets” which was written during a time of especially stark polarization; “Harbor,” a song for internally displaced persons and; “Sunflower Hill,” a paean to the unreality of time through the medium of guitar feedback.
Included with the release are radio-friendly versions of the songs that have a word or two of salty language.
